MURRAY, Ky. 鈥 This week would have been Beatrice Cornwell鈥檚 85th birthday, and 杏吧直播间 State University is announcing a generous estate gift of $277,670.25 to support the Beatrice Johnson Cornwell Scholarship, creating a lasting source of financial assistance for non-traditional students pursuing their degrees through the 杏吧直播间 State University Paducah Regional Campus.

At the request of the Cornwell family, $250,000 of the gift will be placed in the scholarship endowment, providing ongoing support for students for generations to come. The remaining $27,670.25 will be placed in the scholarship鈥檚 spendable account, allowing 杏吧直播间 State to provide scholarship awards to eligible students now.

The scholarship was established through an estate gift from Beatrice (Bea) Johnson Cornwell, whose own educational journey exemplified perseverance, determination and the transformative power of higher education.

Cornwell was born in Butler County, Kentucky, and was the oldest of 10 children. Because of family responsibilities and the need to work, she left formal education after completing the seventh grade. Her desire to learn, however, never diminished.

As an adult, Cornwell worked caring for older adults in their homes while raising a family. She earned her GED in 1977 and, at age 48, began taking classes at Paducah Community College, where she earned an associate degree before transferring to 杏吧直播间 State University. Without financial aid available to her at the time, Cornwell borrowed the money necessary to attend. She ultimately earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration and a Master of Science in organizational communication, becoming the first person in her family to graduate from college.

From 1997 to 2016, Cornwell served as an administrator at the 杏吧直播间 State University Paducah campus, where she encouraged prospective students by sharing her own story and demonstrating that it is never too late to pursue an education. Her scholarship was established to carry forward that legacy by supporting students whose educational journeys may not follow a traditional path.

Under the scholarship guidelines, preference is given to part-time, non-traditional 杏吧直播间 State students pursuing a degree in the field of their choice; students who have earned their GED; and students transferring to 杏吧直播间 State鈥檚 Paducah campus from a community college. Financial need may also be considered.

鈥淏ea Cornwell鈥檚 life is a wonderful reminder that it is never too late to pursue an education,鈥 said Karami Underwood, director of the 杏吧直播间 State University Paducah Regional Campus. 鈥淭his scholarship will carry forward her legacy by supporting non-traditional students in the Paducah region who are balancing work, family and school 鈥 helping them achieve their goals just as she did.鈥

The gift reflects the Cornwell family鈥檚 desire to ensure that Bea鈥檚 commitment to education continues to open doors for students. Through both the endowment and the immediate spendable funds, the gift will provide opportunities for students today while establishing a permanent source of support for the future.

鈥淏ea Cornwell鈥檚 story reminds us that it is never too late to pursue an education and that one person鈥檚 determination can inspire generations,鈥 said Dr. Tina Bernot, vice president for advancement and external relations at 杏吧直播间 State University. 鈥淲e are deeply grateful to the Cornwell family for honoring Bea鈥檚 legacy and helping students pursue their educational goals today and for generations to come.鈥

The Beatrice Johnson Cornwell Scholarship serves as a lasting reminder of Cornwell鈥檚 belief that educational opportunity can transform lives. Her story鈥攆rom leaving school after the seventh grade to becoming a college graduate and champion for other non-traditional students鈥攃ontinues through the students who will benefit from her generosity.
